Here's the question I get more than any other: "Which one of these is going to blend with my hair?"
It's a fair question, and most hair sites answer it badly. They slap "4C" on every coily texture they sell and hope for the best. Then the package arrives, you hold it up to your leave-out, and it doesn't match — so back it goes, and you're back to square one.
So let me be straight with you about the best hair extensions for 4C hair and every other type-4 texture. Here's what we carry in the Kinks & Coils Collection, and which one belongs with which head of hair.
First, an honest word about "4C hair extensions"
No extension on the market is literally 4C hair.
True 4C has almost no visible curl pattern — it's a zig-zag, not a spiral — and it shrinks up to 70 or 75% of its actual length. Nobody wefts that and sells it by the bundle. What you're buying, from us or from anybody else, is virgin human hair that's been steam-processed to mimic a type-4 pattern.
That's not a knock on the hair. Our bundles are 100% virgin human hair, they last 6 months to a year with proper care, and they blend beautifully when you pick the right one. But "which extension IS 4C" is the wrong question. The right question is which extension blends with how I actually wear my hair — and that answer changes depending on whether you're wearing your coils out or wearing your hair pressed.
Keep that in mind and the rest of this gets easy.
Afro Kinky: the closest match for 4B and 4C hair
If you wear your natural hair in its curl pattern and your texture is on the tighter end, this is your bundle.
Afro Kinky is the coarsest, tightest pattern we carry, with a low-shine, matte finish — and that finish matters more than people realize. Natural 4C hair doesn't gleam. When an extension is glossier than your leave-out, the mismatch shows in every photo, even if the curl pattern is close. Afro Kinky doesn't have that problem.
Shop it as single bundles or as a 3-bundle deal for a full sew-in. For a closure install, we carry it in 6x6 and 7x7 HD lace, plus a standard lace closure. For frontals, there's a 13x4 HD and a 13x6 HD if you want ear-to-ear parting freedom.
Not ready for an install? The Afro Kinky Curly Ponytail and Headband Wig both go on in under a minute, and the Afro Kinky Coily Tape-Ins are our tightest pattern of all.
Kinky Straight: for 4B and 4C hair worn pressed or blown out
This one confuses people, so here's the plain version: Kinky Straight isn't straight hair. It's what type-4 hair looks like after a blowout — full, slightly coarse, with body, not sleek and glassy.
That makes it the single easiest blend for anyone who wears their hair stretched. You blow out your leave-out, and it matches. No flat iron passes at 450 degrees trying to force your natural texture to look like silky straight hair it was never going to look like. Less heat, better blend, healthier edges.
It's also the reason Kinky Straight sells so well for us in the fall and winter — press season.
Try the single bundles or the 3-bundle deals. If you're new to extensions and want something forgiving, the Kinky Straight U-Part Wig is one of the most beginner-friendly pieces we sell — you leave out a small section at the part, blend, and go. There's also a ponytail, a headband wig, and tape-ins for quick days.
Kinky Curly: made for 3C and 4A
Kinky Curly is softer and more defined than Afro Kinky — a real, visible curl with spring to it.
If your natural texture sits at 3C or 4A, this is your match. If you're 4C and you buy Kinky Curly expecting a seamless blend at the leave-out, you're going to be disappointed, and I'd rather tell you that now than process a return later.
Where Kinky Curly does work beautifully for 4C hair is in a full closure or frontal install, where none of your natural hair is left out. Then you're not matching anything — you're just choosing the curl you want.
Shop Kinky Curly bundles, the 3-bundle deals, the 13x4 frontal, or grab the ponytail, headband wig, or tape-ins.
Jerry Curl: a defined spiral for 3B and 3C
Jerry Curl is the most defined pattern in the collection — tight, uniform, springy spirals with real shine. It's a look, and it's been everywhere this year.
It suits 3B and 3C hair naturally. For 4B and 4C, it's a style choice rather than a blend, so I'd wear it as a wig, a ponytail, or a full closure install rather than trying to match it to a leave-out.
We carry Jerry Curl in more configurations than any other texture — bundles, bundle deals, five closure sizes from 2x6 through 7x7, three frontals including a 13x6 HD, a ponytail, a headband wig, and clip-ins. If you want the full care routine for this texture, I wrote one here: Jerry Curl Human Hair Bundles: Wash, Style & Care Guide.
Two things that matter as much as curl pattern
Shrinkage changes your length. A 16" Afro Kinky bundle will not hang like a 16" straight bundle — the coil eats length and gives it back as fullness. If you want visible length with a coily texture, size up.
Strand thickness has to match too. Fine natural hair next to very coarse extensions looks like two different heads of hair, even when the pattern is right. Thick, dense natural hair next to something too fine looks sparse. This is where a quick phone call beats guessing.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best hair extensions for 4C hair?
Afro Kinky is the closest match if you wear your hair in its natural curl pattern, and Kinky Straight is the best blend if you press or blow your hair out. Both come in bundles, closures, frontals, ponytails and headband wigs.
Is kinky curly hair the same as 4C hair?
No. Kinky Curly is a softer, more defined curl that blends with 3C and 4A textures. For 4C hair, Afro Kinky is the closer match — it's coarser, tighter, and has the low-shine finish that natural 4C hair has.
Will kinky straight extensions blend without flat ironing my hair?
Yes — that's the whole point of the texture. Kinky Straight mimics type-4 hair that's been blown out, so a simple blowout on your leave-out is enough. You don't need to flat iron your natural hair bone straight.
How many bundles do I need for a kinky curly or afro kinky sew-in?
Three to four bundles for a full, voluminous install. Shorter lengths look full with three; 20" and longer usually need four, because coily textures spread volume out as they shrink up.
Can these bundles be colored?
Our natural-color bundles come in Natural 1B and can be lifted up to #27 honey blonde. Always have coloring done professionally, and don't re-bleach hair that's already pre-colored.
How long does this hair last?
Six months to a year with proper care — often through several installs. Wash gently with a sulfate-free shampoo, deep condition regularly, wrap it at night, and store it between wears.
Still not sure? Just call.
Seven years in this business and I've learned that two minutes on the phone saves a lot of return shipping. Tell me how you wear your hair, what your leave-out looks like, and what you're trying to achieve, and I'll tell you which texture to buy — including if the honest answer is "none of these, get a wig instead."
