Water Wave vs. Deep Wave vs. Loose Wave: Which Bundles Are Right for You?

Water Wave vs. Deep Wave vs. Loose Wave: Which Bundles Are Right for You?

Water wave, deep wave, loose wave. On a product page they can look like three names for the same thing โ€” but once the hair is installed, they behave completely differently. One gives you beachy, wet-look definition. One gives you deep, sculpted volume that turns heads. One gives you soft, romantic movement you can straighten in ten minutes.

After seven-plus years in the hair business, I can tell you the number one reason a client is disappointed with an install isn't the quality of the hair โ€” it's that the texture didn't match the look she had in her head. So let's fix that. Here's exactly how these three textures differ, and how to choose the one that fits your life.

Water Wave: The Wet-Look Texture

Water wave is exactly what it sounds like โ€” hair that looks like it just came out of the ocean. The pattern is a soft, glossy S-wave that cascades down the strand rather than coiling tight. It's the texture that photographs beautifully because it catches light along every curve.

What makes water wave special is that it looks incredible wet. Most textures need to fully dry before they look "done." Water wave doesn't. Spritz it with water and the wave pattern springs right back to life, glossy and defined. That's why it's such a favorite for summer, vacations, pool days, and anyone who doesn't want to fight their hair every morning.

Choose water wave if:

  • You want that soaking-wet, beachy, effortless look
  • You want volume without heaviness
  • You want a low-fuss texture you can refresh with water instead of heat
  • You like a wave that's defined but not tight

The specs: 100% virgin human hair, 100g / 3.5 oz per bundle, machine double stitch wefts, natural 1B (bleachable to #613), available 10" through 30".

Note: water wave bundles have a 7โ€“10 business day processing window before they ship, so order with a little lead time before an event.

Deep Wave: Maximum Volume and Definition

Deep wave is the boldest of the three. The wave pattern is tighter, deeper, and more sculpted โ€” closer to a curl than a wave in some sections. It mimics the pattern of naturally curly hair, which is why it blends so beautifully for a lot of my clients with 3Bโ€“3C natural texture.

This is the texture you pick when you want to be seen. Deep wave delivers the most volume of the three, and because the pattern is so defined, it holds shape all day. Wet the hair and the waves come alive with serious body. Stretch it out and you get a softer, more relaxed wave โ€” so you're getting two looks out of one set of bundles.

Choose deep wave if:

  • You want big, dramatic, head-turning volume
  • You have naturally curly hair you're trying to blend with
  • You want a wave pattern that stays defined instead of dropping
  • You don't mind a little extra detangling time in exchange for that fullness

Heads up on upkeep: the tighter the pattern, the more attention it needs. Deep wave benefits from regular conditioning and gentle finger-detangling, and it truly needs a satin bonnet at night. Skip that step and the pattern will frizz faster than the other two textures.

Loose Wave: Soft, Romantic, Wearable

Loose wave sits at the gentlest end of the spectrum. The waves are open and flowing โ€” think blowout waves rather than curls. It's the most "everyday" of the three textures, and honestly the one I recommend most often to first-time bundle clients.

The reason is versatility. Loose wave takes almost no effort to wear as-is, and it's the easiest of the three to flat iron bone straight when you want a different look. If you're someone who changes up her style week to week, this is your texture. It's also the most forgiving if you're new to caring for extensions, because the open pattern is less prone to tangling.

Choose loose wave if:

  • You want soft, natural-looking waves rather than a statement texture
  • You switch between wavy and straight often
  • This is your first sew-in and you want low maintenance
  • You work somewhere that calls for a more understated look

So Which One Should You Actually Order?

Here's how I'd break it down if you were standing in front of me:

  • Going on vacation or want the wet look? Water wave, every time.
  • Want the most volume for your money? Deep wave โ€” and go shorter than you think, because the pattern shrinks the visible length.
  • First time wearing bundles? Loose wave. It's the most forgiving.
  • Want one install that reads as two different looks? Deep wave or loose wave โ€” both straighten well.
  • Blending with natural curls? Deep wave will match the closest.

A note on length and shrinkage

All three of these textures will look shorter installed than the number on the bundle, because wave patterns take up length. Deep wave shrinks the most, water wave next, loose wave the least. If you want hair sitting at your mid-back, add roughly two to four inches to what you'd order in a straight texture. When in doubt, call or text me at 1-833-904-1267 and I'll help you pick.

How many bundles do I need?

Each bundle is 100g. For most installs:

  • 10"โ€“18": 2โ€“3 bundles
  • 20"โ€“24": 3 bundles
  • 26"โ€“32": 3โ€“4 bundles

Longer lengths need more bundles because the hair thins out toward the ends. If you're adding a closure or frontal, factor that in as well โ€” shop 3 bundles + closure sets here.

Caring for Wavy Bundles (All Three Textures)

The care routine is the same across water wave, deep wave, and loose wave โ€” and it's what separates bundles that last months from bundles that last weeks:

  • Wash with a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, working the product through in smooth downward strokes to protect the wefts.
  • Air dry whenever you can. It protects the cuticle and preserves the wave pattern.
  • Always use a heat protectant before hot tools, and keep your iron at 400ยฐF or below. Higher heat permanently compromises the hair.
  • Sleep in a satin bonnet. Non-negotiable. Satin cuts the friction that causes frizz, dryness, and shedding.

The full routine is in our Hair Extension Care Guide.
